Recipe - Broccoli and Beef

[This recipe has been updated and can be found here at this link] The broccoli I served with this dish was soft but if you prefer some crisp to your veggie in this particular dish, you can blanch the broccoli. There are plenty of instructions online on how to do so. Also, the amount of beef and broccoli you use is really up to you; I used equal parts of both.

Step 1: Ingredients (serving size: 3-4 dinner portions)

      Entree
  • vegetable oil (for pan)
  • 3/4 lb beef flank or sirloin, sliced
  • 3/4 lb broccoli, cut up
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (dissolved in water)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
      Beef Marinade
  • black pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
      Sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
      Ingredient notes:
  1. Beef flank/sirloin - The thinner the slice, the better tasting this dish will be! Of course, it's also a preference thing.

Step 2: Marinating
Heat up a pot of water. Slice the beef and make the marinade. Mix the beef with the marinade until well-coated and let it sit for 10+ minutes.

*Note: If eating with rice, you can start up your rice cooker right now so that the dish and rice will finish at the same time.

Step 3: Broccoli
Now that the water’s boiling, cook the broccoli for approximately 2 minutes to avoid soggy veggies. While it’s cooking, make your sauce and start heating up your pan on high. Then drain the broccoli.

Step 4: Cooking the beef
Add some oil to your pan and then your beef. Because it is so thinly sliced, please make sure that you spread all the slices out as evenly as possible to get even cooking. They will cook quickly so after about a minute, flip them.

Step 5: Sauce and vegetable additions
Add the sauce! You don’t have to wait for the slices to completely cook either (I didn’t). Beef cooks quickly. Then add your garlic and broccoli.

Step 6: Completion
Make sure that you get your dissolved cornstarch in the mix before you turn off the heat. It thickens your delicious sauce =]. Enjoy with rice!
